Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by recurrent, unprovoked seizures. These seizures occur due to abnormal electrical activity in the brain and can vary significantly in type and intensity.

As a neuropsychiatrist, Dr. Narinder Pruthi provides specialized care for individuals living with epilepsy, focusing on both seizure management and the psychological impact of the disorder.

Seizures can manifest in various forms, including generalized seizures that affect the entire brain, or focal seizures that occur in specific areas. Generalized seizures may involve loss of consciousness, convulsions, or sudden muscle stiffness, while focal seizures may cause altered awareness, unusual sensations, or repetitive movements. The unpredictability of seizures can lead to significant anxiety, depression, and social isolation, making it important to address both the neurological and psychological aspects of the condition.

Diagnosing epilepsy involves a comprehensive evaluation, including a detailed medical history, neurological examination, and diagnostic tests like an electroencephalogram (EEG), which measures electrical activity in the brain. In some cases, MRI or CT scans are used to identify underlying structural abnormalities that may be contributing to the seizures.

Treatment for epilepsy often includes anti-seizure medications that help control the frequency and severity of seizures. Dr. Pruthi works closely with patients to find the most effective medication regimen with the fewest side effects. For patients who do not respond well to medication, other options like surgery, vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), or ketogenic diets may be considered.

In addition to medical treatment, Dr. Pruthi emphasizes the importance of mental health support. Living with epilepsy can be emotionally challenging, and counseling or cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) can be beneficial in managing the anxiety, stress, and depression often associated with the condition. By addressing both the physical and emotional aspects of epilepsy, Dr. Pruthi provides comprehensive care that improves the overall quality of life for his patients.
