Sexual Problems

Sexual problems, or sexual dysfunction, encompass a wide range of issues that affect an individual’s ability to experience sexual satisfaction. These can include difficulties with desire, arousal, orgasm, or pain during intercourse. Sexual dysfunction can have both physical and psychological causes, making it a complex condition to diagnose and treat.

As a neuropsychiatrist, Dr. Narinder Pruthi takes a holistic approach to addressing sexual problems, recognizing that neurological, psychological, and emotional factors are often intertwined.

Common sexual problems include low libido, erectile dysfunction (ED), premature ejaculation, delayed ejaculation, and anorgasmia (difficulty reaching orgasm). For women, issues such as vaginismus (involuntary muscle spasms in the vaginal area) and dyspareunia (pain during intercourse) are common concerns. These conditions can be caused by physical factors such as hormonal imbalances, chronic illness, or medication side effects, but they are often exacerbated by psychological factors like stress, anxiety, depression, and relationship problems.

Dr. Pruthi begins treatment with a thorough medical and psychological assessment, exploring potential neurological causes of sexual dysfunction. This can include hormonal testing, imaging studies, and a detailed review of the patient’s medical history. In cases where psychological factors are prominent, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or psychosexual counseling may be employed to address underlying mental health issues that affect sexual function.

For conditions like erectile dysfunction or low libido, medical interventions may be required, such as the prescription of phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors (e.g., sildenafil, tadalafil), hormone replacement therapy (HRT), or other medications designed to restore hormonal balance and improve sexual function. Dr. Pruthi also emphasizes lifestyle changes, such as stress management, regular exercise, and a balanced diet, to support sexual health.

By addressing both the physical and emotional aspects of sexual dysfunction, Dr. Pruthi provides a comprehensive, empathetic approach to treatment, helping patients overcome these challenges and improve their sexual well-being and relationships.
